Energy and Water:

19inch logs provide centeral heating and hot water. Logs are from the grounds, local or recycled timber. Insulated log piles help keep thermal loss down

The hot water is from two massive solar arrays backed up by log burner or green electricity.

All our electricity comes from 100% renewable sources.

Energy policy involves monitoring usage and aiming to use less.

Our water comes from the mains and is metered.

Dual flush loos are fitted

Some rooms harvest and use rain water for loo flushing

Most rooms are not on a normal sewerage system. The sewerage is filtered by tanks and eventually by the reed beds into the pond.
Our pond has native brown trout so it's clean!

We extensively use recovered water for all our garden needs not purified treated tap water.

Guests are encouraged to exploit local mountains and visit attractions using buses or the trains where appropriate. The station for the Ffestiniog Railway is 300m away.

Guests are made aware of local bike hire schemes.

Food:

Seasonal fruit and veg from the garden grown on our own composted rich soil

Breakfast – All our meat comes from a local butcher who hand makes the sausages

Eggs - free range  eggs from our own ducks or locally from Trawsfynydd

The majority of other food is bought locally at the co-op to benefit the local economy and to support local jobs.

Fair trade sources provide all our tea, coffee and sugar. Other products such as fruit, chocolate, biscuites, subject to availability, are also from Fair-trade sources where it does not cause excessive food miles.

Eco Policy

At Bryn Elltyd we have won awards for energy use and our wildlife garden.
Our aim is to deliver a truely memorable stay that won’t cost the earth!
It is possible to have a warm 3 star guest house in a garden thriving with life, wholesome food and yet have  a minimal impact on the environment. We do not own the planet but just lease it for our life time.

We need your help to make the difference:-

  1. Towels and bedding are changed only at your request.
  2. Turn out lights when you leave rooms (the hall and outside lights are left on as a safety precaution during the night).
  3. We will make sure that the standby on appliances are switched off (it is estimated that the equivalent of 2 power stations would be saved if everyone did just that)
  4. Some rooms have no outside walls. Some rooms have sheep’s wool insulation.
Shut all doors to keep the heat in.
Insulation levels are high but what about personal insulation? Are you more comfortable with a wooly jumper on?
  5. We recycle all cans, paper and bottles, cardboard and plastics; vegetable matter is composted and used on the garden. One wheely bin for 14 people

    As recomended in the
    Guardian Newspaper
